-Chapter Fourteen-

Lady Vehalnotte

Argen was beginning to live by a simple code:

If it seemed like something Shivadra or Lord Marilucon would think of, don’t do it.

It was an easy shorthand to remember how to be himself. Given how strange his life had become and the many things he’d done recently that made him doubt himself, he needed an easy way to remember how his morality worked. Even if Lord Marilucon wasn’t completely misguided, his morality was more complicated than Argen liked. And there was something about the way he conducted business - from the shadows, keeping secrets - that Argen found distasteful. As a result, the most simple rule was total transparency. He hated breaking Annasophia’s heart, but lying to her was more painful for both of them.

“I see…” She said, slowly, letting his words sink in. For a while she was silent, contemplating what he had just told her, before finally asking, “So in a way it’s almost like the war isn’t over yet, huh?”

Argen’s brow furrowed. He hadn’t thought of it like that.

“How do you mean?”

“We’re still plundering spoils. Still performing subterfuge. Still gathering intelligence.” Annasophia leaned her head back, “There are probably still soldiers out there working. There might even still be Slesovari troops, too. There could still be fighting to this day.”

Argen grit his teeth. He hadn’t thought about that at all. There could still be more casualties of war, even if their leadership had crumbled and they’d surrendered. There might still be enemy troops guarding their homeland against invaders.

Annasophia stared at the chandelier on the ceiling, watching the sea of glass crystals sparkle in the light. Finally, she shook her head and met her fiance’s eyes again.

“So, do you think I should just… not come, then?” She asked, innocently.

“I cannot say.” Argen said, regret clear in his voice, “Either way I shall understand. I… cannot apologize enough for how this has gone. I deeply wish we could have gone together, but I have no other choice.”

“I understand…” Annasophia said, plainly, “At least there is some good coming out of this whole thing.” She smiled, dryly, “You know… perhaps I will go. It’s still Stassana’s wedding, after all. I wouldn’t miss it for the world!” She shook her head, vehemently, “What was I even thinking?”

Annasophia smiled in a dubiously authentic way. There was something overly brave about it and a little forced. It only served to make Argen sad. He averted his eyes from his fiance and turned towards the orchard, staring into the emerald void of trees for a long while.

“I promise nothing will transpire between her and I. A dance and some hand-holding. Nothing more. You have my word.” Argen said, unable to meet his fiance’s gaze. He hated that he had to do any of this, but he had no choice. And neither did she, really.

“Nothing…?” Annasophia’s ears turned a bit red, “So nothing like last time?”

“Nothing of the sort! I promise.” Argen shot her a look as determined as it was frightened. Just
